Resolving Conflict: Educating For Peace

Quaker Values in Education

This has been edited from the ‘Education: Our Spiritual Concern’ Group 2000

Quakers believe that there is that of God in every person.

In consequence, the needs of every learner are recognised and equal value given to them.

Learning is a lifelong experience and is a part of living rather than a preparation for it.

Each individual is respected and the contribution each makes to the learning process is valued; discrimination of any kind is actively rejected.

The responsibility of the individual to the group is encouraged as is the group’s responsibility to the individual.

Methods of discipline are sought which seek to promote the positive.

Questioning, exploration, honesty and openness are encouraged.

Achievements and successes are stressed whist bearing in mind that the excessive use of competition can be destructive.
